Cathedral Peak Wine Estate is happy and proud to announce the arrival of our new CellarMaster, Flip Smith, who takes over from Andri Hanekom, who helped establish an excellent foundation from which Flip could take over.
The 2015 harvest will be Flip’s first as winemaker at the estate and he looks forward to the opportunity and privilege to be able to use his 25 years of winemaking experience to produce wines in South Africa’s newest wine region, the majestic central Drakensberg area of KwaZulu-Natal.
Flip gained the majority of his winemaking experience under the tutelage of his father, the famous winemaker Dassie Smith, who was cellarmaster at Rooiberg and Botha Cellars. Thanks to this excellent training Flip went on to win some prestigious winemaking awards, including Double Gold at Michelangelo Wine Awards, Boland Bank Trophy (Grenache Red Wine) at the Young Wine show, Winemakers Choice and Swiss International Wine Awards (Best Red Blend), and Veritas Gold. He is confident that he will be able to continue this excellent track record at Cathedral Peak Wine Estate.
Flip believes in a hands-on approach in winemaking and is passionate about the industry. He maintains that terroir, high quality grapes and expert working knowledge of winemaking is absolutely essential in the creation and production of quality wines.
“A great wine is not made solely in the cellar, but has it roots outside under the sun”
Apart from the role as CellarMaster and producing world class quality wines, Flip’s other responsibilities will include interacting with the public and teaching them as much as he can about the fine wines he will be producing at Cathedral Peak Wine Estate.
Flip, Cathedral Peak Wine Estate welcomes you and looks forward to your wines.
